These are our grandchildren

and a few farm animals, too.

Sterling Family Farms began as a retirement dream that would allow us to enjoy country living while being near our grandchildren. We wanted a small bit of acreage for a garden and a few animals, but the farm we purchased had much, much more, and we found ourselves with an old, overgrown farm that was just begging for some TLC. We arrived at the farm with our one truck load of possessions on July 4, 2009, and, with the help of our son and his wife, have been renovating our 26 acres since then.

We decided to begin with a few chickens and a goat or two, three rabbits, and a small garden. That would certainly be plenty to keep us busy the first year, but (as with all projects) one thing led to another. We needed fencing for the goats, and soon we were on a course to sustainability using a rotating pasture system to nourish our chickens, goats, and other livestock. At the same time we began to plant a garden and renovate the orchard. With proper care and two growing seasons, all the living things on the farm began to produce in great quantities, and we started to look for markets for our bounty.

Still, with the idea of keeping the whole thing small, we began to market our eggs at the local farmers’ markets. There we found a growing demand for products that could be sold directly to customers as they visit the farm – eggs, fresh goats’ milk, cheese, rabbits and chickens, fruit and vegetables. And to think, it all began with a bit of an egg business. The grand
“Ah, Ha!!” here is that we have answered the question, “Which came first – the chicken or the egg?” The answer for us is The egg.
